2023 Main Stage Schedule

We are a reflection of our community. Rooted in thousands of years of tradition, but indicative of where our community is now.

By platforming a completely local lineup, we create space for our community to tell its story to the world. And by prioritizing POC, Indigenous, LGBTQ2+, and female voices, we pass the mic so that every one gets a chance to be in the same boat. We do this through on-the-ground work to partner with local artists and communities, and search for talented artists in our community.

Local, diverse, and independent; we’re proud to present a platform where voices and perspectives that make up the vibrant mosaic of our community can be truly reflected, and where our community can discover themselves.

Awakening of the Dragons: The Opening Ceremonies of the Concord Pacific Dragon Boat Festival
All Access Friday  |  5:00 PM  |  102.7 THE PEAK Main Stage presented by Creative BC

Each year, the Concord Pacific Dragon Boat Festival honours the ancient Chinese traditions behind dragon boat racing with traditional Eye Dotting and Dragon Boat Blessing Ceremony. We invite priests and members of the congregation of the Evergreen Taoist Church to the waters of False Creek to conduct this ancient and colourful ritual. Ancient Chinese dragon mythology has it that the dragon sleeps in the mountains, and travels to the water at the moment when the eyes of the dragon are dotted. Guest dignitaries assist in this rite, dipping brushes in pots of red cinnabar paint and dabbing the eyes on the boats’ dragon heads. Learn more about the ancient traditions behind the sport of dragon boat racing here.

With Coe’s signature stylings of soulful R&B and rootsy world rhythms, it dances between the revolutionary and romantic. The two are inseparable–once we realize that it’s not about being radical–it’s about humankind and human kindness. Like his soulful influences who deliver messages of social justice, humanity and love, Buckman Coe doesn’t shy away from facing today’s issues and does it with a booty-shaking feel-goodness. He believes in Universal Love and is saturated with a shameless optimism for humanity

Metaphora is a continuation of Barber’s musical story that confidently tackles everything from issues of empowerment, sexual politics, the complications of love, and depression. It’s introspective and personal. It’s also a dance party. On Metaphora, Jill Barber bursts back onto the stage with a bold and daring offering of music, confidently executed with the style and grace of a woman who knows exactly what she’s doing.

Alexandria Maillot
International Saturday  |  11:30 AM  |  102.7 THE PEAK Main Stage presented by Creative BC

Alexandria Maillot’s resume is as colourful as her genre-blending timbre. Her gritted, inflective vocals and lyrical narratives have often drawn her comparisons to music heavyweights such as Feist, Stevie Nicks, and Alabama Shakes’, Brittany Howard. Now, the Vancouver Island “swoon rock” artist is gaining momentum within the Canadian music landscape with her upcoming sophomore album, set for a 2019 release. Performing since the age of seven, Alexandria has already amassed an impressive list of credits, including being scouted by David Foster at age twelve, working with Randy Bachman, and being featured on the Oprah Winfrey network. She’s performed at music festivals such as Rifflandia, Riverfest Elora, and Iceland Airwaves, and toured extensively across Canada and the EU. The 2016 release of her debut album, Time, has proven to be a body of work that has merited national radio attention and widespread critical acclaim amongst industry peers and music lovers alike.

Tourist Company
International Saturday  |  1:00 PM  |  102.7 THE PEAK Main Stage presented by Creative BC

In an industry as volatile as the music business, making a career as an indie band can seem daunting, if not downright impossible. For Tourist Company, the Vancouver, Canada based musical duo of Taylor Swindells and Brenon Parry, they haven’t let the uneasiness of their life choice hinder them in any way. In fact, they seem to have taken that tension and used it as creative tinder. They released their debut record Apollo in 2016 to critical acclaim in their home country and toured it relentlessly across Canada and the world, playing shows in the United States, Europe, and Mexico. The music they made on their last album was far-reaching; cinematic and grandiose. This time around, it’s more introspective. “I was thinking about the way we process life in the 21st century. How we interact with tragedy and bad news. Those moments carry a sense of urgency and I wanted that to invade this new record.” Tourist Company’s new single “Conflicted/Restricted” is available everywhere now with a new album expected in early 2020.

Schwey
International Saturday  |  2:30 PM  |  102.7 THE PEAK Main Stage presented by Creative BC

Schwey is a band created out of necessity by Jacob Schwinghammer and Isaiah Dobbs. In its formative years, underground dive venues were the only option for underage people to have a good time. Band members have come and gone, but the musicality has never faltered. Younger brother, Jarah Dobbs has become an indispensable component of the live show and is featured on Schwey’s self-titled debut album, out now on 604 records.

Little Destroyer
International Saturday  |  4:00 PM  |  102.7 THE PEAK Main Stage presented by Creative BC

Yukon Blonde
International Saturday  |  7:00 PM  |  102.7 THE PEAK Main Stage presented by Creative BC

“Be the reference.” That’s the mantra Yukon Blonde tacked up on the studio wall during the sessions for their fourth album, Critical Hit, and it emboldened them to rip up the indie rock playbook and embrace a synth-dazzled new sound that’s easy to love but difficult to pigeonhole. Now a decade into their career, Yukon Blonde are following no one except themselves.

Critical Hit began at a literal crossroads: after a tour, singer-guitarist Jeffrey Innes flew to Madrid to be with the woman he had met on tour in Spain, while his bandmates James Younger (bass), Brandon Scott (guitar), Rebecca Gray (keyboards) and Graham Jones (drums) headed back home to Vancouver.

The band reconvened on Canada’s West Coast, where they laid down the initial demo tracks, many of which ended up on the final record. Critical Hit was inspired by emotional turmoil, but it’s nevertheless a joyful album that’s full of experimentation and discovery. Empowered by their DIY process and beholden to nothing except their own whims, Yukon Blonde have captured the purest version of themselves.

Kutapira – Main Stage 5pm, Friday June 23

What started thirteen years ago as a youth world music initiative has metamorphosized into the crowd pleasing percussion explosion known today as Kutapira! The name Kutapira means “sweetness” in the Shona language of Zimbabwe, a fitting title for a band that plays a fusion of Zimbabwean marimba with West African and Afro-Cuban percussion and more. This highly stylized marimba fusion consists of some contemporary Zimbabwean tunes but the majority of the music is composed and arranged by Kutapira and inspired by genres like Reggae, Funk, Latin Jazz, Samba, Cumbia, Disco and Hip Hop. For years they performed exclusively as a mallet swinging, skin-slapping quintet but now, in their latest evolutionary form, feature guitar and vocals.

Kutapira blends traditional Afro-Cuban influences with Zimbabwean marimba music to create a vibration that is all their own! With hundreds of performances under their belt, a growing repertoire that continues to explore the vast potential of their arrangement, and a solid reputation among concert programmers as ‘fire starters’, the future couldn’t look any sweeter for Kutapira.

2017 Dragon Boat Festival Music

The Big Easy Funk Ensemble celebrates the amazing variety of music that has grown out of New Orleans. With influences from 60s funk legends The Meters and Dr. John to more recent groups like Galactic and Trombone Shorty. BEFE (pronounced ‘beefy’) mixes many genres of funk, jazz and blues to create awesome grooves. The 9 member band includes a 3-piece horn section comprised of Andrew Benton (Sax), Kevin Tang (Trombone) and Ryan Naso (Trumpet).  The rhythm section includes Reece Worth on guitar, Eric Stephenson on bass, Tyler Gibson on keyboards/organ, Ryan Davis on drums, Jeffrey Kornblum on Percussion and last but not least the mesmerizing Chris Berry on Vocals.

A Mardi Gras party in 2014 brought the band together for the first time and by the end of the show both the musicians and the audience knew that this group had to continue.  Two years and many shows later, BEFE has developed a large repertoire of songs covering a wide range of NOLA talent from Louis Armstrong to the Dirty Dozen Brass Band to Allen Toussaint to the Pimps of Joytime.  The Big Easy Funk Ensemble is fast becoming one of Vancouver BC’s preeminent party bands by attracting fans and stimulating dance floors.  Don’t miss their next show at a party near you!
